T v media player5/21/2023 That fancy hardware powers one of Nvidia Shield's most compelling features: its A.I. And the Pro does so mostly thanks to the inclusion of Nvidia's Tegra X1+ processor, 256-core GPU, and 3GB RAM (1GB more than the $149 Nvidia Shield TV). With no cult of consumer personality feeding wind into its sails, Nvidia has to do a little more to justify its hefty price, especially when you can get a top-of-the-line Roku Ultra streamer for upwards of $100 less. ![]() (And before you Apple fanatics rip me yet another new one, keep in mind that it's a fee I gladly pay every other year for a new iPhone and iPad, so calm down. Only the 64GB variant of the Apple TV 4K matches it in price, and let's be honest with ourselves here: a fair chunk of that is the "Apple Tax" (aka "Fanboy Fee") tacked onto pretty much anything that comes out of Cupertino. I say all of that in part to defend (or at least prepare you for) the $199 sticker price of the Nvidia Shield TV Pro, one of the priciest mass-market video streamers you can currently buy. In other words, unless you and I are streaming Netflix via the same (or at least comparable) hardware, we're not having the same viewing experience, even if we have the same internet speeds and the same display. whatever, and exactly how many megabits-per-second of internet connectivity are required to get the most out of any of these services, our discussion about video streaming is incomplete until we all acknowledge that the device via which we do our streaming matters. ![]() But one point that I will continue to drive home until it sticks is that, while we all quibble about the relative performance advantages of Vudu vs. As I argued in a controversial editorial a few months back, streaming isn't merely the future of home cinema in many ways it's already the glorious now of home cinema.

Poker quest rpg guild5/21/2023 Through filking, we met Carolly Hauksdottir, who was doing contract art and animation for Sierra On-Line. We continued to attend science fiction conventions, where we discovered “filking” – folk singing with science fiction and fantasy themes. Neither of those projects went beyond the concept stage. We came up with some ideas for a D&D-like arcade game and a multiplayer fantasy game, maybe for Compuserve or Genie in that mostly pre-Internet era. ![]() Meanwhile, Judges Guild published my Tower of Indomitable module for D&D and other fantasy game systems. It was inspired by the Arizona D&D system, various fantasy games systems I had read or played, and things we had both read. We decided to develop our own game system, which we called Fantasy Guild. Lori and I edited a newsletter for the nation SIG, The Spell Book. I ran the games for the local Mensa fantasy gaming special interest group. I worked as a programmer and Lori got a job teaching pre-school. Then I got a job in San Jose (near SF), and talked her into joining me there. Galton twin study5/21/2023 ![]() Twins have also suggested that something outside the genetic code can explain why one identical twin might develop Type 1 diabetes or Parkinson’s disease and the other doesn’t.ĭelmer Presley served a year in Vietnam and returned with combat stress that affected his daughter. NASA even conducted its own twin study on how astronaut Scott Kelly’s gene expression changed after a year on the International Space Station, relative to that of his identical twin, Mark, who remained on Earth. In more recent years, however, twins have revealed a genetic component to a number of outcomes such as epilepsy, religiosity, autism and mental health, according to experts. Segal is a fraternal twin herself.Īccording to a paper in the International Journal of Epidemiology, Galton published “the first detailed attempt to use the phenomenon of twinning to estimate the relative powers of nature and nurture.” But he took the research to a troubling conclusion and “argued repeatedly for the need for the state or its wiser citizens to seek to encourage the best to outbreed the rest,” ultimately coining the term “eugenics.” They are formed when a single fertilized egg splits in two, creating two embryos with the same DNA.Īttempts to put twins under the proverbial microscope go as far back as 1875, when English scientist Francis Galton, who was also Charles Darwin’s half-cousin, “first came upon the twin research design, which is really a very simple and very elegant way of looking at behavior,” said Nancy Segal, professor of psychology and director of the Twin Studies Center at California State University, Fullerton. Identical twins are an even more exclusive club: roughly four in every 1,000 births. Twins treated for genetic disorder in the wombĪbout 33 in every 1,000 human births in the United States are twins, a rate that has climbed in recent decades as more women marry later and take fertility drugs or employ in vitro fertilization, factors that are known to increase the likelihood of multiple births. Often, twins are perfect controls, he said.Ĭorinna's twin boys - Martin, left, and Linus - were the first humans to be treated for their genetic disorder while still inside the womb. “Studies of human health are plagued by these confounding factors,” Craig said, including when someone was born, where they were born and their socioeconomic status, ethnicity and gender. Identical twins share the same genes, so any differences between them – say, more wrinkled versus less wrinkled skin – could be the result of their environment. Scientists love to study twins because they help answer age-old questions about nature vs. “That’s one of the ways twin research is growing,” he said. Craig was not involved in the new study.Īs twin registries merge and incorporate big data, as in the new study, experts like Craig look forward to new stages of twins enriching science. ![]() Craig, associate professor at the Deakin University School of Medicine and deputy director of Twins Research Australia. “You get people who are very deterministic, who say ‘it’s genes’ or ‘it’s environment.’ This shows it’s a mixture,” said Jeffrey M. For example, morbid obesity was found to be strongly influenced by genetics and the environment, Patel said. Of the diseases the researchers looked at, 40% had a significant genetic component, and about 25% had an environmental one – though the strength of that relationship could be different for any given disease. “The relationship between genetics and environment in disease is incredibly nuanced,” said study author Chirag Patel, assistant professor of biomedical informatics at Harvard Medical School. Log flume ride disney world5/21/2023 ![]() Imagineer Marc Davis, one of Disney’s most revered designers who had worked on the original Pirates attraction, came up with a two-pronged adventure rooted in the stories of the Wild West. Plans were put forward to build a Western-themed attraction which included elements of the Pirates’ ride. The reasoning? Actual pirates were so ingrained in Floridians’ minds that an attraction based on swashbuckling buccaneers would be of little interest to the locals. When Walt Disney World was in the planning stages, it was decided that Pirates of the Caribbean, which debuted in Disneyland in 1967 to rave reviews, would not be built in Florida. The genesis of Splash Mountain and its nearby companion attraction in Walt Disney World, Big Thunder Mountain, is quite an interesting story and speaks to how the folks at Walt Disney Imagineering never give up on a good idea, even if it takes a rather circuitous route. It seems Disney’s creative team members had been racking their brains, trying to create an attraction that would fit alongside the Country Bear Jamboree in Disneyland in what would eventually become known as Critter Country.īaxter thought of the 1946 Disney classic Song of the South, and its stories of Brer Fox, Brer Rabbit and, yes, Brer Bear, and figured the story would fit nicely into the new land devoted to critters.Īnd, besides, who wouldn’t want to cool off on a log flume ride during southern California’s notoriously steamy summer months? How Splash and Thunder mountains came to be While alternating between hitting the gas pedal and tapping the brakes, Baxter came up with the basic concept for Splash Mountain. (Paul Hiffmeyer/Disneyland)Īctually, that’s exactly what happened when Disney designer Tony Baxter got stuck in rush-hour traffic on his way to work in 1983. Who among us, while wallowing in exhaust fumes, hasn’t dreamed up a popular Disney theme park attraction? Guests hurtle down a five-story drop at the Splash Mountain attraction, which can be found in Critter Country, at Disneyland. Who among us hasn’t gotten stuck in mind-numbing traffic, bemoaning the wasted time spent crawling along in the bumper-to-bumper, slow-motion madness?

Monitor pixel check5/21/2023 By going to the main page, you’ll see dead pixel examples. It's the simplest option that can test the presence of the issue, by making the screen a single color. You also can test your screen for defective pixels more carefully using special programs or tools. Do you see how one pixel that stands out from the others appears in the same place? This is a defect we speak about. Carefully view them on your computer at 100% view size. First, set ISO 100 or 200, then take several photos with different colors and patterns. So, it wouldn't be difficult for you to determine exactly what the problem is in front of you. You already know what colors are dead pixels. If you’ll notice a small dot in the same place, the defective pixel is in front of you. Move the camera to the right, left, up, or down. After these settings, point the camera lens at something bright. Set Program/Auto or Aperture Priority mode, then turn on Live View. If you suspect that your camera has defected with pixels, you can carry out testing right here. But there are several ways, that will help you with this. Sometimes it’s very difficult to detect the presence of dead or stuck pixels on new screens. How to Test if there are Stuck vs Dead Pixels on New Screens with Special Checker Tools? The advantage of the stuck pixels is that they might disappear over time by themselves and are easily fixed. Can dead pixels spread regularly? They rarely appear on sensors and digital liquid crystal cameras. The stuck pixel is a quite common problem that most often occurs among old monitors and those that you have not used for a long time. That’s why you see a black dot on the screen of the smartphone or other device. The dead at the same time is off, moreover permanently. The stuck pixel continuously receives energy, so it has a certain color if you turned on your gadget. If to consider what does dead pixel looks like, we see that it has a rectangle shape white or black color. The stuck pixel looks like one dot of a particular (green, red, or blue) color all the time in the same place. Difference Between Stuck and Dead Pixel: What Pay Attention toĪt first glare, it may seem that stuck and dead pixels are almost the same thing. Are you seeing a persistent small rectangle of black or white color? This is a dead pixel. So, what does a dead pixel look like? Look attentively at the screen. The dead pixel, unlike the stuck pixel, doesn’t receive power for all its subpixels, causing them to be off. And when it receives incomplete information, it becomes defective, i.e., is displayed in only one of three colors. Why do they appear and how to fix stuck pixels on a phone or another gadget? The matter is that they always receive power. This dot typically doesn’t move, but can sometimes flicker. There can also be a combination of these colors. What does a stuck pixel look like? It appears as a dot in the same place and has one particular color: red, green, or blue. But over time when actively using the gadget, there is a common occurrence, a stuck pixel. It’s pixels that make up full-fledged pictures, photos, and videos on smartphones, tablets, and laptop screens. They are painted in red, green, and blue colors. This is a small object, usually rectangular, that contains three subpixels. What is a Stuck Pixel and How to Spot it?įirst, let’s find out what is a pixel. ![]() You can fix these defects! But first, you need to learn to distinguish between two of these issues and find out the root of them to find the right solution. If you find a dead pixel on your new TV or display screen of mobile or personal computer, the first thing you should do is check out the warranty information that came with it.As practice shows, it is the stuck pixel vs dead pixel that often appear in gadgets. They can also be caused by electrical stress during shipping or excessive temperature changes. Dead pixels can be caused by many things, including dust particles or improper chemical bonding during manufacture. Depending on where they are located on the screen, they may appear as dots or lines. This is one of the main reasons that manufacturers offer warranties on their televisions.ĭead pixels are generally transparent or black in color and may be either stuck on or off (like a light switch). Today, most manufacturers have systems in place to catch and correct these errors, but sometimes a defective pixel will slip through. Pixel defects (commonly referred to as dead pixels) are an unfortunate reality of the manufacturing process. I've been looking for an appropriate dead pixel tester that runs in a browser, rather than a desktop app. |
